Congratulations!

You found one of my trap doors!

Lucky for you, this is not a danger zone. Be careful! I may not be around to help you the next time. These trap doors can lead to danger!

Here is a secret I read about that may be of interest to you regarding the silent movie starring Lon Chaney. It is about still yet another deleted scene, one that is macabre and disturbing.

In this movie, just like the next three movies that followed, Erik's life begins normally. He is a genius in music, magic, and architecture, but he is not deformed in any way.

During his years in Persia, he entertains Persian royalty with the notorious courtyard tournaments. The Sultan fears Erik's craftiness, however. Erik is sentenced to death by ant torture. He is rescued by this compassionate daroga, who witnessed everything and put his own life in danger to help Erik. Unfortunately, the daroga is too late (or perhaps too early). Erik's life is spared, but now he is horribly disfigured.

It would make more sense within this context that Erik is criminally insane and it adds weight to his words, "If I am the Phantom, it is because man's hatred has made me so." Somewhere in here is some long overdue (albeit creepy) fan fiction waiting to happen, in my humble opinion.
